This report is based on=20 information provided by the Office of the UN Humanitarian = Coordinator in=20 Indonesia, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG), National=20 Coordinating Board for the Management of Disaster and = IDPs/Refugees=20 (BAKORNAS PBP), Provincial Coordinating Unit for the Management of = Disaster and IDPs/Refugees of Papua (SATKORLAK PBP), Central = Health=20 Department (DEPKES), Central Social Department (DEPSOS), UNICEF, = IFRC,=20 Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), OCHA Papua.=20

I. SITUATION=20

1. An earthquake measuring 6.9 on Richter scale hit Nabire = district in=20 Papua Province (Irian Jaya) on Friday (6 Feb.) at 06:05 AM local = time. The=20 intensities (Modified Mercally scale) registered in the impact = areas are=20 as follows:=20

2. Electricity and telecommunication systems are completely = down. The=20 only means of communication is through radio contacts. Some = buildings,=20 houses as well as public infrastructure have been damaged or = cracked.=20 However, the scale of the damage is still uncertain. The local = airport is=20 also affected and can only be used for light single engine = aircraft.=20

3. According to the Central Health Department, 24 people were = killed=20 and 67 others were injured (as of 14:00 PM). As the Public = Hospital in=20 Nabire was also affected, the inpatients are being treated under = temporary=20 tents in front of the hospital.=20

II. NATIONAL RESPONSE=20

4. The Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare will visit = Nabire on=20 Saturday 7 February. The Central Government will provide IDR 1 = billion=20 (USD 119,048) to cover immediate relief assistance. An integrated = team=20 from the Provincial Government in Jayapura will also arrive in = Nabire on 7=20 February to undertake impact assessment.=20

5. According to the Central Health Department, the Provincial = Health=20 Department dispatched on 6 February a three-person team of medical = professionals, 13 tents, First Aid Kits and intravenous sets to = Nabire.=20 PMI is dispatching 10 staff from its chapter in Sorong city by = boat.=20

III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE=20

6. BAKORNAS PBP has informed OCHA Indonesia that international=20 assistance is welcomed. For coordination purposes, all assistance = should=20 be reported to, and closely coordinated with BAKORNAS. 7. OCHA is fielding a two-person team composed of staff based = in=20 Indonesia. The team is expected to arrive to Nabire on Saturday 7 = February=20 to assist in the assessment of needs and in facilitating = international=20 humanitarian assistance. A representative of UNICEF-Papua will = join the=20 mission on Sunday 8 February.=20

8. IFRC is also fielding its disaster management delegate to = Nabire.=20
