This report is based on information provided by the Office of = the UN=20 Humanitarian Coordinator in Indonesia and a joint OCHA and UNICEF=20 assessment team that visited Nabire.=20

I. SITUATION=20

1. According to the state-owned electricity company, PLN, the = power=20 plant was badly damaged, however the generators are operational. = Some=20 equipment needs to be replaced and some essential spare parts are = also=20 required. PLN's staff, with the support of the community, is = gradually=20 restoring power supply in the affected area. Work is also in = progress for=20 the full restoration of the telecommunications system.=20

2. In the airport, commercial flights have begun to operate.=20

3. Even though prices have risen slightly, supply of basic = commodities=20 is normal and there are no immediate needs for food assistance as = the=20 Government is covering existing needs.=20

4. PMI (Indonesian Red Cross) is conducting an assessment to = provide=20 building materials for 400 families who lost their houses. The = Government=20 has yet to draw up plans for shelter rehabilitation assistance.=20

5. According to the Director of PDAM (state-owned water = company), there=20 is some damage to water distribution systems. However, assessment = of=20 damages has not been completed. In villages, people are used to = collecting=20 rainwater for drinking purposes and use wells for washing and = cleaning.=20 However, those who have lost their houses are facing shortage of = drinking=20 water and as a consequence of seismic activity, water in wells is = muddy=20 and with a strong smell of sulphur. Water supplied by tankers is = unsafe=20 and people do not have containers for preserving/storing it.=20

6. According to UNICEF, medicines available are adequate to = meet=20 current needs. Due to damage sustained by the hospital building, = the=20 government is planning to relocate some functions of the hospital = to a=20 military hospital. Laboratory, surgery and pediatric sections are = located=20 in tents where patients currently continue to be treated. = M=E9decins Sans=20 Fronti=E8res (MSF) is providing support and complementary = assistance to the=20 health sector.=20

II. NATIONAL RESPONSE=20

7. Except for safe water, relief assistance provided by the = Government=20 is appropriate and satisfies the needs of the affected population. =

III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE=20

8. MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) installed a water = distribution=20 point at their residential complex to provide free water to people = living=20 in the neighbourhood.=20

9. With the contribution of plastic sheeting from MAF (160 = pcs.) and=20 the Government of Japan (1000 pcs), there are no further needs for = plastic=20 sheeting.=20

IV. PRIORITY RELIEF NEEDS=20

10. Some 4,000 jerry cans (20-40 litre capacity) for urban = areas and=20 500 drums (200 litre capacity) water collection are urgently = needed.=20
